The way a SWIFT/BIC code from Russia is structured

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

MAKM Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
RU Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
21 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Russia: banks and their SWIFT/BIC codes

This directory contains 785 banks and other institutions in Russia, with 1646 SWIFT/BIC codes in total. Each code points to an institution or one of its branches.

Look for the bank you need in the list and click through to see the full list of codes and the details a transfer needs. The rest of this page covers the structure of the codes, the cost of transfers and how to avoid mistakes before a payment.

Most SWIFT codes in Russia: JSC Rosselkhozbank

JSC Rosselkhozbank leads our list of Russia banks in SWIFT/BIC codes. Its head office code is RUAGRUMMXXX – the code most transfers need.

Practice differs in whether they register branch codes – a high count is not a measure of size. Paying someone at JSC Rosselkhozbank? Go with RUAGRUMMXXX except when the recipient gives you a branch code.

What a transfer to Russia really costs

An international bank payment to Russia often costs more than the fee suggests. There is the transfer fee, sometimes charges from intermediary banks along the way and, above all, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.

The real cost is often in the rate, not in the fee – the bank builds a margin into its rate. Compare the bank’s rate with the mid-market rate. The difference is your real cost.

Money transfer services frequently offer a rate near the mid-market rate. GoldexPay lists transfer services next to each other, showing the amount that reaches the recipient for the same amount sent.

SWIFT transfers to Russia

Since Russia does not belong to SEPA, a transfer from abroad normally goes through SWIFT. This means the payment always needs the SWIFT/BIC code of the recipient’s bank.

Not every country uses IBAN numbers – where there is none, the local account number is enough. Check with the recipient exactly which details their bank needs for payments from abroad – many banks give clear instructions for this. Before it arrives, a transfer may go through intermediary banks that take a fee.

Transfer times to Russia

There is no fixed answer for payments to Russia: some arrive the same day or the next while others need several business days. Bank holidays in Russia or in the sending country add extra days, because banks do not process payments on those days.

If the money seems late, the sender should contact their own bank for a trace – the receiving bank often cannot see a payment that has not arrived. Specialist transfer services often provide tracking in their app.

Recognising a SWIFT code from Russia

Each SWIFT/BIC code consists of eight or eleven characters, always in the same order. The first four letters identify the bank, characters five and six are the country code and the next two mark the location.

No matter which bank, all Russia codes have the same country code in positions five and six. If those two letters do not match Russia, the code belongs to a bank somewhere else.

If the last three are XXX, it means the main office, and the 8-character version leads to the same place. For most transfers the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

How reliable is this list?

The best place to find the correct BIC remains a document from the bank itself, such as a statement or the account page in online banking. When the code you were given does not match the code listed here, stop and ask – contact the recipient or their bank.

We gather bank codes using publicly available data and update our list from time to time. Banks reorganise, close branches and change codes. Treat this list as a reference, not as the final word: the bank details from the recipient come first. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site and is not affiliated with the banks listed.

Be wary of payment requests containing a new account, especially when they come by email. Always verify changed details through a separate channel.

Banks in Russia beginning with the letter :letter

This page only shows the banks in Russia whose name starts with :letter in alphabetical order. The counts in the introduction still refer to the whole country, not just this letter.

If the bank you need does not appear under :letter, try another letter: banks are often registered under their full legal name. Use the full list for Russia when you do not know the exact name.

Getting paid from abroad into an account in Russia

If you are waiting for money from abroad in Russia, give the sender all details at once. Share the account holder’s name, the IBAN or account number, your bank’s SWIFT code and your address, which some banks require.

Find the bank in the list on this page to check its code, but take the code from your own bank details when in doubt. It helps to add your bank’s name and city as well.

Do not be surprised if the amount credited is below the amount on the sender’s receipt. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee, your bank may charge for incoming payments, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate applies. For business payments, state who bears the costs.
