Binance vs Bitpanda: a side-by-side cost check

Choosing between Binance and Bitpanda is less obvious than it looks. The useful question is how much you actually keep once every fee and the exchange rate have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.

On our site, Binance sits in the crypto exchange category and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Bitpanda belongs to broker and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. This already says something about where they overlap and where they do not.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through how we work out the cost, where each provider tends to do well and who should pick which. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.

Which one suits you?

For travel spending, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

If you want to buy crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.

Does the amount matter?

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. With Binance or Bitpanda, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.

Using both, or switching

You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, check the calculator on this page, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It is a quick check that pays off.

When you move away from one provider, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.

Two kinds of service, partly overlapping

These two come from different corners of the market: crypto exchange and broker. Their offers overlap only in part. Only the shared conversions appear in our scenarios, so the rest of each offer stays out of view.

A money service is built for sending and spending currencies, often to bank accounts abroad. A crypto exchange revolves around digital assets; regular currencies are mostly the on-ramp and off-ramp. That difference matters more than a few cents on one conversion.

If you only want to change currency or send money abroad, a crypto platform is mostly a detour. If you want to buy or sell crypto, an exchange offers more choice in assets and order types.

Our verdict: Binance comes out cheaper

For 4 out of 4 comparisons that Binance and Bitpanda both support, Binance came out cheaper once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Binance the edge for most typical transfers.

Still, Bitpanda is not out of the race. Check the table above to see where Bitpanda comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, that single row counts more than the total score.

Cost is one thing, not everything. Bitpanda may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Binance and Bitpanda may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Also look beyond the conversion: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

Our method

Every provider earns money in two ways: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Delivery time and ease of use

Fastest delivery: Instant at Binance and Instant at Bitpanda. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.

Speed often depends on how you pay. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Is your money safe?

Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
