Bitfinex or Bitpanda
Choosing between Bitfinex and Bitpanda comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much ends up on the other side once both the visible fee and the hidden margin have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.
On our site, Bitfinex sits in the crypto exchange group and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Bitpanda belongs to broker and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. Those two labels say something about where they overlap and where they do not.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.
Bitfinex or Bitpanda: which fits your situation?
For travel spending, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
For buying digital assets, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
How fast the money arrives
Bitfinex lists its quickest option as Instant, while Bitpanda lists Instant. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
Why the amount can change the winner
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.
Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
The fee is only half the story
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
So we never compare fees on their own. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Other costs can matter too: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
What to check on safety
Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
Our verdict
In 4 of 4 comparisons that both providers offer, Bitfinex came out cheaper at live rates. On price alone, that makes Bitfinex the default pick.
Still, Bitpanda is not out of the race. The scenario table above shows where Bitpanda comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, the overall tally matters a lot less.
Price is also not the only factor. You may already have a verified account with Bitpanda, which saves a sign-up. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
How we calculate the cost
The cost of a conversion has two parts: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
This comparison is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Can you use Bitfinex and Bitpanda together?
Using two providers side by side is common. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, compare live quotes here first, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.
Before you close an account, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and download your statements for your records.
Two kinds of service, partly overlapping
This comparison puts two different kinds of services side by side: crypto exchange and broker. They overlap, but only partly. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.
A money service is built for sending and spending currencies, often to bank accounts abroad. An exchange is first of all a place to trade crypto, with euros or dollars mainly used to get in and out. So the cheaper side in the table is only part of the picture.
If you only want to change currency or send money abroad, the money service is usually the more natural choice. For crypto, look at the exchange first and treat its currency features as a bonus.
