Crypto.com vs Revolut: a side-by-side cost check
Deciding between Crypto.com and Revolut is rarely about the logo. The useful question is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.
In our database, Crypto.com sits in the crypto exchange category and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Revolut is filed under broker and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. That alone tells you something about where they overlap and where they do not.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through how we work out the cost, where each provider tends to do well, and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
Using both, or switching
Using two providers side by side is common. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.
Before you close an account, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.
Which one suits you?
When you travel, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.
For buying digital assets, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
A money service and a crypto exchange
This comparison puts two different kinds of services side by side: crypto exchange versus broker. They overlap, but only partly. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.
A money service focuses on paying, spending and sending in regular currencies. A crypto exchange revolves around digital assets; regular currencies are mostly the on-ramp and off-ramp. So the cheaper side in the table is only part of the picture.
When crypto is not on your list, the money service is usually the more natural choice. If crypto is the goal, the exchange is the logical place, even if it also handles some currency transfers.
How the numbers are worked out
The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
This comparison is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
Why “zero fee” is not always cheap
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
So we never compare fees on their own. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Other costs can matter too: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.
Our verdict
For 4 out of 4 scenarios that Crypto.com and Revolut both support, Crypto.com left you with more money at live rates. That gives Crypto.com the edge for most typical transfers.
This does not rule out Revolut. Scroll back to the table to find where Revolut comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.
Cost is one thing, not everything. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Revolut. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
How fast the money arrives
Crypto.com lists its quickest option as Instant, while Revolut lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
The payment method matters as much as the provider. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.
Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.
Why the amount can change the winner
The size of the amount can change the winner. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
What to check on safety
Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
