OFX versus PayPal: a side-by-side cost check
Deciding between OFX and PayPal is rarely about the logo. The useful question is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.
In our database, OFX falls into the money transfer service category and works with Currencies, while PayPal is filed under money transfer service and covers Currencies. That alone tells you a fair bit about which jobs each one is built for.
Below the calculator we walk through how we work out the cost, where each provider tends to do well and how to combine the two. Rates on this page are live, so the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.
Our verdict
For 5 out of 5 scenarios we can test on both sides, OFX delivered the better result after fees and rate margin. That gives OFX the edge for most typical transfers.
Still, PayPal is not out of the race. Check the table above to see where PayPal comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.
Price is also not the only factor. PayPal may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
Regulation and safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
Same category, different details
Both OFX and PayPal sit in the money transfer service category, so they compete for the same customers. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.
Look at coverage first: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. OFX handles Currencies; PayPal handles Currencies. A missing currency is a dealbreaker that no price advantage fixes.
Then compare price on the route you actually use, together with practical things like limits and support. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
Small amounts vs large amounts
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. With OFX or PayPal, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.
Delivery time and ease of use
OFX lists its quickest option as 1–2 business days, while PayPal lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.
The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
How the numbers are worked out
There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
GoldexPay is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Switching between OFX and PayPal
Using two providers side by side is common. It is perfectly normal to keep OFX for one task and PayPal for another. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
Before every larger transfer, compare live quotes here first, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It takes a minute and can save real money.
Before you close an account, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and download your statements for your records.
Which one suits you?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
If you send money abroad regularly, compare the received amount for your usual sum. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.
When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
Where the real cost hides
“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.
Also look beyond the conversion: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
