OFX vs Paysend

Choosing between OFX and Paysend comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.

On our site, OFX falls into the money transfer service group and handles Currencies, while Paysend is filed under money transfer service and covers Currencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator you can read our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and how to combine the two. Because the rates are live, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

Verdict: OFX is cheaper more often

In 4 of 4 conversions we can test on both sides, OFX came out cheaper once fees and exchange rate were counted. On price alone, that makes OFX the default pick.

This does not rule out Paysend. The scenario table above shows the routes where Paysend does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, the overall tally matters a lot less.

Price is also not the only factor. You may already have a verified account with Paysend, which saves a sign-up. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

Safety checks before you sign up

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.

With crypto platforms, look a little further: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.

Why “zero fee” is not always cheap

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

So we never compare fees on their own. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.

Other costs can matter too: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.

Same category, different details

Both OFX and Paysend sit in the money transfer service category, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Start with coverage: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. OFX covers Currencies, Paysend covers Currencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.

Then compare price on the route you actually use, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.

Does the amount matter?

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

How we calculate the cost

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

GoldexPay is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Delivery time and ease of use

OFX lists its quickest option as 1–2 business days, while Paysend lists Within minutes. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.

Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Try the app before you move a large amount.

Switching between OFX and Paysend

Many people do not use one provider for everything. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

For anything above everyday amounts, check the calculator on this page, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

When you move away from one provider, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.

OFX or Paysend: which fits your situation?

When you travel, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

To send money to a bank account abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

If you want to buy crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
