PayPal or Paysend
Deciding between PayPal and Paysend comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.
In our database, PayPal falls into the money transfer service category and covers Currencies, while Paysend is filed under money transfer service and covers Currencies. That alone tells you something about where they overlap and where they do not.
Further down this page you can read how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.
Can you use PayPal and Paysend together?
Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.
Before every larger transfer, compare live quotes here first, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.
If you switch, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.
How the numbers are worked out
The cost of a conversion has two parts: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
We are not owned by any provider. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
Speed and convenience
PayPal lists its quickest option as Instant, while Paysend lists Within minutes. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.
Speed often depends on how you pay. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.
Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.
Why the amount can change the winner
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. Before a big transfer with PayPal or Paysend, read the current pricing on their site.
Where the real cost hides
A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.
Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
Verdict: Paysend wins on cost
In 6 of 6 conversions we can test on both sides, Paysend came out cheaper after fees and rate margin. That gives Paysend the edge for most typical transfers.
This does not rule out PayPal. The scenario table above shows which conversions PayPal still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.
There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward PayPal. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
Which one suits you?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.
Regulation and safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
Same category, different details
PayPal and Paysend belong to the same category, money transfer service, so they compete for the same customers. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.
Look at coverage first: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. PayPal covers Currencies, Paysend covers Currencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.
Then compare price on the route you actually use, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.
