A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

ECFA Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
IN Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
B1 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Finding a SWIFT code in India

This directory contains 394 banks and financial institutions in India, with 4272 SWIFT/BIC codes in total. A BIC tells every bank in the chain exactly which bank should receive the money.

Select the bank from the list to see the head office code and any branch codes along with tips for payments to and from that bank. The sections below covers the structure of the codes, the cost of transfers and how to avoid mistakes before a payment.

Incoming international payments in India

For an international payment into a India account, the sender needs more than the SWIFT code. In practice that means: your name exactly as it appears on the account, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and sometimes your address.

The code of your bank is in our list but always compare it with your own bank details. You can include your bank’s name and city.

The amount you receive is often less than what was sent. Charges on incoming payments differ per bank. Agree with the sender who covers the fees.

How SWIFT codes from India are built

A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long and the parts always come in the same order. The first four letters identify the bank, the fifth and sixth characters are the country code and the next two mark the location.

No matter which bank, all India codes have the same fifth and sixth letters. When those two letters do not match India, you are looking at a bank in another country – worth double-checking.

The optional last three characters stand for a branch or department; XXX is used for the head office. Use a branch code only when the recipient’s bank asks for it.

SWIFT transfers to India

Because India is outside SEPA, a transfer from abroad is usually sent as a SWIFT payment. That means you always need the SWIFT/BIC code of the receiving bank.

Not every country uses IBAN numbers – where there is none, the local account number is enough. The receiving bank usually provides a list of required details for incoming international payments. International transfers can pass through correspondent banks, each of which may deduct a fee.

Transfer times to India

There is no single answer for payments to India: some arrive within a day, others take several business days. Payments made after the cut-off time or on weekends and holidays usually go out a business day later.

Many banks are connected to SWIFT gpi. Every payment carries a unique transaction reference, the UETR. Money transfer services usually show a status in their app so you can follow the payment.

State Bank of India and its SWIFT codes

Of the 394 banks in India, State Bank of India is listed with the largest number of codes. The head office uses SBININBBXXX.

A large number of codes usually reflects that the bank registers branches and departments separately – it says nothing about the size of the bank as such. If not the recipient asks for a branch, the head office code SBININBBXXX works for transfers to this bank.

About our data and how to check a code

The most reliable source for the BIC is the recipient’s own bank details. If the code you have differs from the code listed here, do not guess.

This list draws on public sources and is updated regularly. Still, banks merge or change codes, so information can be out of date. Use our data as a starting point, not as the final word; the recipient’s bank details are leading. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site and is not affiliated with the banks listed.

Be wary of invoices with a new account, especially when they come by email. Always confirm a change of bank details by phone on a number you know.

Paying in INR: what conversion costs you

The currency of India is the Indian Rupee (INR). When you pay another currency, the amount has to be converted somewhere along the way: by your bank, an intermediary or the receiving bank.

Who converts the money makes a difference: every bank has its own margin. Compare how much INR arrives with different providers. Rates for INR move all the time – some providers let you lock in a rate.

Sending money to India for less

An international bank payment to India often costs rather more than you think. Besides a fixed fee, intermediary banks can deduct a charge, and when the money is converted the bank often applies a rate below the actual market rate.

The real cost is often in the rate, not in the fee: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. A simple test: put the rate you get next to the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

For a lot of routes, a specialist provider is less expensive than a traditional bank transfer – mostly thanks to the exchange rate. GoldexPay compares transfer services side by side so you can see what actually arrives in India.
