SWIFT transfers to India
For India you usually need the BIC. Without the BIC, most banks will not process the payment.
In some countries, the account is identified by a local account number instead of an IBAN. The recipient’s bank usually has a list of required details for payments from abroad. SWIFT payments can pass through correspondent banks, each of which may deduct a fee.
About our data and how to check a code
The best place to find the correct BIC remains a document from the bank itself, such as a statement or the account page in online banking. If the code you have does not match our list, stop and ask.
Our SWIFT/BIC directory draws on publicly available sources that we update periodically. Institutions reorganise, close branches and retire codes, and no directory catches every change immediately. Before a payment that matters, confirm the BIC with the recipient’s bank. We are a comparison service for money transfers and not part of any bank listed here.
Scammers often send payment requests with changed bank details that look completely genuine. A real SWIFT code tells you nothing about who owns the account.

Bank or transfer service for India?
The price of a payment to India has several parts. There is a transfer fee, possibly charges from intermediary banks along the way and, most importantly, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.
Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate, not in the fee – the bank builds a margin into its rate. Compare the bank’s rate against the mid-market rate that you find on financial sites; the gap is what conversion costs you.
Money transfer services frequently use a rate near the mid-market rate with clearer fees. Before your next transfer to India, it is worth comparing the total cost on GoldexPay.
When does money sent to India arrive?
There is no fixed answer for transfers to India: many land within a day, others take several business days. Transfers sent late in the day or just before weekends and holidays usually start the next business day.
When a payment takes longer than expected, the sender should contact their own bank – the receiving bank often cannot see a payment that has not arrived. Keep the payment confirmation until the money has arrived.
Recognising a SWIFT code from India
Bank identifier codes follow the same format worldwide: eight characters. The first four letters identify the bank, characters five and six form the country code and the next two mark the location.
For banks in India, letters five and six are the ISO country code of India. If those two letters point to another country, you are looking at a bank somewhere else – worth double-checking.
When a code ends in XXX, it refers to the main office. In most cases the head office code is fine unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.
Getting paid from abroad into an account in India
A sender in another country will ask for several details from you – incomplete details often cause delays. That means: your name as your bank knows it, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and sometimes your postal address.
Look up the bank in the list on this page and compare the code with your own bank details – your bank statement is the final word. You can include the name and city of your bank as well because some forms have separate fields for it.
Do not be surprised if the amount credited is below what the sender paid. Correspondent banks can take a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and if the money is converted, an exchange rate margin comes on top. On invoices, agree how the fees are split to avoid a shortfall.
The Indian Rupee (INR) and conversion costs
The national currency in India is the Indian Rupee (INR). Money sent in a different currency is exchanged into INR – and the bank that does it picks the rate.
Where the conversion happens has an effect on how much arrives. Often it is cheaper to send INR directly via a provider with a good rate. With bigger transfers, even a small gap in the rate adds up quickly.
Most SWIFT codes in India: State Bank of India
Among the 394 institutions we list, State Bank of India has the largest number of SWIFT/BIC codes in India. The head office uses SBININBBXXX.
A large number of codes usually reflects separate codes for branches, departments or services, not necessarily that the bank is the biggest in the country. Paying someone at State Bank of India? Use SBININBBXXX unless a specific branch code is requested.
