Receiving money in India from abroad

A sender in another country needs a few details about your account – incomplete details often cause delays. That means: your name as your bank knows it, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and sometimes your postal address.

Your bank’s code is in the list on this page, yet the version on your own statement or in your banking app is leading. Certain banks also ask for your bank’s address.

Expect that the amount credited is smaller than the amount on the sender’s receipt. Fees for incoming transfers vary per bank; check the price list of your bank. On invoices, state who bears the costs.

About our data and how to check a code

The safest source for a SWIFT code is the recipient’s own bank details – an invoice, a statement or a screenshot from online banking. A wrong code can cause a delay, a returned payment or extra fees, so compare it with the list on this page.

We gather SWIFT/BIC codes using public sources and update them regularly. Even so, banks merge or retire codes. Use our data as a starting point, not as the final word. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site.

Scammers regularly use payment requests carrying changed bank details from what looks like a familiar address. Always confirm a change of bank details through a separate channel.

How SWIFT codes from India are built

A BIC is 8 or 11 characters long and follows a fixed pattern. First comes four letters for the bank, followed by two letters for the country and a two-character location code.

You can recognise a bank code from India from the fifth and sixth characters. If the country letters point to another country, you are looking at a bank somewhere else, so check again.

If the last three are XXX, it means the main office, and the 8-character version leads to the same place. For most transfers the head office code is fine unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

Tracking a payment to India

There is no fixed delivery time for payments to India: some arrive within a day. Transfers sent late in the day or on a weekend or public holiday often go out the next business day.

Many banks are connected to SWIFT gpi for faster and traceable payments. Every gpi transfer carries a unique reference, the UETR. Save your transfer receipt until the recipient confirms; a bank needs it to start a trace.

Most SWIFT codes in India: State Bank of India

In our data, State Bank of India has the largest number of SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in India. Its head office code is SBININBBXXX – the code most transfers need.

The number of codes tells you more about how it organises its payments than about its size. Making a payment to State Bank of India? Use SBININBBXXX unless a specific branch code is requested.

What a transfer to India really costs

When you send money to India via a regular bank, the stated fee is only part of the cost. You pay a transfer fee, sometimes charges from intermediary banks and, most importantly, the exchange rate markup when currencies differ.

That exchange rate margin is often the biggest part of the cost because it is hidden in the rate. Compare the bank’s rate against the mid-market rate, the midpoint you see on financial news sites. The difference is your real cost.

Specialised transfer providers frequently use rates closer to the mid-market rate. GoldexPay compares what recipients in India receive with different services, which makes the cheapest option easy to spot.

Paying a bank in India from abroad

India is outside the SEPA area, so European euro rules do not apply. Payments from abroad normally travel through the SWIFT network – which is why you need the BIC of the recipient’s bank.

Not all countries use IBAN numbers; in that case the local account number is used instead. Check with the recipient exactly which details their bank requires for incoming international payments; banks often publish instructions for this. SWIFT payments sometimes go via one or more intermediary banks, each of which may deduct a fee.

The Indian Rupee (INR) and conversion costs

The local currency of India is the Indian Rupee (INR). If you send another currency, it has to be converted at some point – by your bank, a bank in between or the recipient’s bank.

Who converts the payment matters. Often you pay less if you send INR straight away through a provider that converts near the mid-market rate rather than letting the receiving bank convert. Exchange rates move all the time – some providers let you lock in a rate.
