India: banks and their SWIFT/BIC codes

This overview covers 394 banks and financial institutions in India and 4272 SWIFT/BIC codes between them. You need a SWIFT/BIC code mostly for payments across borders.

Select the bank from the list to see its head office code and any branch codes. Further down you can read how a code from India is put together, how to send money there at a fair price and how to check a code before you pay.

Transfer times to India

There is no fixed answer for transfers to India: some land the same day or the next, others take several business days. Bank holidays in India or in the sending country can add extra days, because banks do not process payments on those days.

If the money seems delayed, the sender should contact the sending bank and ask for the status or the UETR; only the sending side can start an official trace. Specialist transfer services often provide tracking online, which makes it easier to see where the money is.

Verifying a SWIFT code from India

The safest source for a SWIFT code is the recipient’s own bank details. If the code you have does not match the code listed here, do not guess.

This list is based on public sources. Still, banks merge or retire codes. Treat this list as a reference. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site and has no link to the banks in this list.

Scammers regularly send fake invoices carrying changed bank details. A real SWIFT code says nothing about who owns the account: criminals use real codes too.

Paying a bank in India from abroad

To pay into India you will almost always need the BIC – India is not a SEPA country. Without the BIC, your bank cannot send the payment at all.

Not all countries use the IBAN; in that case the local account number is used instead. The recipient’s bank often provides a list of required details for incoming international payments, and it is worth following them to the letter. International transfers can pass through correspondent banks.

Bank or transfer service for India?

What you pay for a transfer to India has more than one component, and the fee on your screen is only one of them. On top of a fixed fee, correspondent banks may deduct a charge, and when the money is converted the bank often uses a rate below the real market rate.

The markup on the rate is often the largest part of the cost. An easy check: put the offered rate against the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

For many routes, a specialist provider turns out to be cheaper than a traditional bank transfer, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay compares the amount that arrives in India across providers, which makes the cheapest option easy to spot.

What a sender needs to pay you in India

To receive an international payment in India, the person paying you needs not just the SWIFT code. Give them the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and your address.

Find your bank in the list on this page. Certain sending banks also ask for your bank’s address; it does no harm to include it.

Do not be surprised if the amount credited is below what the sender paid. Charges on incoming payments vary per bank. On invoices, state how the fees are split.

State Bank of India and its SWIFT codes

In our directory, State Bank of India has the most SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in India. Its main office uses SBININBBXXX.

How many codes a bank has tells you more about how it registers branches and services than about its size. Paying someone at State Bank of India? Use SBININBBXXX except when a specific branch code is requested.

The Indian Rupee (INR) and conversion costs

The currency in India is the Indian Rupee (INR). Money sent in a different currency will be exchanged into INR on its way to the recipient – and the bank that does it picks the rate.

Who does the conversion has an effect on how much arrives, as rates and margins differ per bank. Often you pay less if you send INR directly via a transfer service that converts near the mid-market rate so the receiving bank does not need to convert again. On larger amounts, even a small difference in the rate can be worth more than the fee.

The structure of a India SWIFT/BIC code

Every SWIFT/BIC code consists of 8 or 11 characters. Characters one to four identify the bank, the fifth and sixth characters are the country code and the next two mark the location.

You can recognise a code from India by the fifth and sixth characters. A code with a different country code belong to a bank abroad, even if the bank name looks familiar.

The long version adds a branch code – XXX stands for the head office. Use a branch code just if the recipient’s bank asks for it.
