Tracking a payment to India

There is no single answer for transfers to India: some arrive within a day. Payments made after the cut-off time or just before weekends and holidays often start the next business day.

Many banks are connected to SWIFT gpi. Every gpi transfer gets a unique reference, the UETR. Save the payment confirmation – you will need it if something goes wrong.

Sending INR to India

Most accounts in India are typically held in INR, the local currency. Money sent in a different currency will be exchanged into INR on its way to the recipient.

Who converts the payment matters. In many cases you pay less to send INR straight away via a provider with a good rate. Exchange rates move during the day, so a quote is usually valid only briefly.

State Bank of India and its SWIFT codes

In our directory, State Bank of India has the most SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in India. Its main office uses SBININBBXXX; that is usually the right code for a transfer.

Practice differs in how many codes they register – a high count is not a measure of size. If not a branch code is given, the head office code SBININBBXXX works for a payment to State Bank of India.

Bank or transfer service for India?

An international bank payment to India can cost rather more than you think. You pay a transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks along the way and, above all, the exchange rate markup when currencies differ.

The markup on the rate tends to be the biggest part of the cost, even though it is not listed as a fee. A simple test: put the rate you get next to the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

For a lot of currency pairs, a transfer service turns out to be cheaper than a traditional bank transfer, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay compares transfer services side by side so you can see the amount that reaches the recipient for the same amount sent.

Receiving money in India from abroad

To receive a transfer from abroad in India, the person paying you has to have not just the SWIFT code. In practice that means: your name as your bank knows it, your IBAN or account number, the SWIFT/BIC code of your bank and sometimes your postal address.

Your bank’s code is in our list, yet the version on your own statement or in your banking app is leading. It helps to add your bank’s name and city as well because some forms have separate fields for it.

Do not be surprised if the amount credited is below what the sender paid. Fees for incoming transfers vary per bank. On invoices, state how the fees are split, so nobody is left short.

Why a transfer to India needs a SWIFT code

India is outside the SEPA area. International transfers to India usually go through the SWIFT network.

Depending on the country, accounts are identified by a domestic account number instead of an IBAN, sometimes with an extra bank or branch code. The receiving bank often has a list of required details for incoming international payments – follow them exactly. Before it arrives, a transfer can pass through intermediary banks that charge for their part.

Recognising a SWIFT code from India

SWIFT/BIC codes follow one international format: eight characters plus an optional three-character extension. First comes a four-letter bank code, followed by a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.

For banks in India, letters five and six are the ISO country code of India – that is the quickest way to spot one. When the country letters do not match India, the code belongs to a bank somewhere else, so check again.

The optional last three characters stand for a specific branch; XXX is used for the head office. For most transfers the head office code is what you need.

About our data and how to check a code

The best place to find the correct BIC is a document from the bank itself. An incorrect BIC may lead to delays, a payment being sent back or extra fees – compare it with the code in our list.

We collect bank codes from publicly available data and check them regularly. Even so, banks merge or change codes, so information can be out of date. For a payment that matters, check the BIC with the recipient’s bank. We are a comparison site for money transfers.

Be wary of invoices containing a new account, especially when they come by email. A valid BIC says nothing about who owns the account – scammers use the codes of real banks.
