How a SWIFT/BIC code from India is structured

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

SHAS Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
IN Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
B1 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Finding a SWIFT code in India

On this page you find codes for 394 institutions in India, 4272 codes in all. You will need such a code mostly for international transfers, and especially for payments in foreign currencies.

Look for the bank you need in the list and click through to see the full list of codes and the details a transfer needs. The sections below covers how the codes work, the cost of transfers and the checks worth doing before a payment.

Banks in India beginning with the letter :letter

The letter filter narrows the list to banks in India starting with :letter. The counts in the introduction still cover the whole country and not only this selection.

Cannot find the bank? Its official name may start with a different letter – think of the full legal name instead of the brand. Try the full list for India if you do not know how the name is spelled.

Most SWIFT codes in India: State Bank of India

Of all banks we list for India, State Bank of India is listed with the largest number of SWIFT codes. The head office of State Bank of India has SBININBBXXX.

Practice differs in whether they register branch codes – a high count is not a measure of size. Unless the recipient asks for a branch, the head office code SBININBBXXX works for a payment to State Bank of India.

Check the code before you pay

Have the recipient send you the account details directly from a recent statement. When the code you were given differs from the code listed here, do not guess: check with the recipient or the bank.

We collect bank codes using public sources and update our list regularly. Banks merge, close branches and retire codes. Before any payment that matters, confirm the BIC with the recipient’s bank. GoldexPay is an independent comparison service, not a bank.

Watch out for payment requests containing a new account. Before paying, verify a change of bank details by phone.

Sending INR to India

Bank accounts in India are usually held in INR, the local currency. When you pay another currency, it gets converted at some point.

Who converts the money matters, because each party uses its own rate. Compare how much INR arrives via different services before choosing one. Exchange rates move all the time.

The cheapest way to send money to India

When you transfer money to India via a regular bank, the fee you see is rarely all of what you pay. On top of the fee, intermediary banks can deduct a charge and, if currencies are converted, the bank usually uses a less favourable rate than the real market rate.

The real cost is often in the rate – the bank builds a margin into its rate. Compare the bank’s rate against the mid-market rate that you find on financial sites. The difference is your real cost.

Specialist money transfer services often use a rate near the mid-market rate. GoldexPay lists these providers side by side so you can see the amount that reaches the recipient.

Why a transfer to India needs a SWIFT code

To pay into India you almost always need a SWIFT/BIC code. Without it, your bank cannot send the transfer.

Depending on the country, the account is identified by a local account number instead of an IBAN, sometimes with an extra bank or branch code. The recipient’s bank usually has instructions for incoming international payments – follow them exactly. SWIFT payments can pass through correspondent banks.

Recognising a SWIFT code from India

Every SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Characters one to four identify the bank, characters five and six are the country code and the next two give the location.

In every code from India, letters five and six show the two-letter ISO code of India. If those two letters do not match India, the code belongs to a bank in another country.

The long version adds three characters for a branch, where XXX means the head office. For most transfers the head office code is fine unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

Tracking a payment to India

A SWIFT payment to India typically needs one to a few business days – it depends on currency, route and the banks in between. Payments made late in the day or just before weekends and holidays often go out a business day later.

When a payment takes longer than expected, the sender should contact their own bank. Money transfer services usually provide tracking in their app so you can follow the payment.

Receiving money in India from abroad

For an international payment in India, the person paying you has to have more than the BIC. In practice that means: your full name as your bank knows it, your IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and sometimes your postal address.

Your bank’s code appears in the list on this page but always compare it with your own bank details. Some sending banks also ask for the name and address of your bank.

What lands in your account is often lower than what was sent. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate comes on top. Agree with the sender who covers the fees, especially for larger amounts.
