The way a SWIFT/BIC code from India is structured
A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:
- FAER Bank code
- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- IN Country code
- 2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
- 21 Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
Finding a SWIFT code in India
Our directory contains 394 banks and other institutions in India and 4272 SWIFT/BIC codes between them. You will need a SWIFT/BIC code mostly when making payments across borders.
Every bank is listed with its own page showing its main code and, where available, codes for branches and departments. Further down we explain how codes from India are built, how to send money to India at a fair price and how to check a code before you pay.
Sending INR to India
India uses the Indian Rupee (INR). When you pay money in a different currency, it gets converted at some point – by your bank, a bank in between or the recipient’s bank.
Who does the conversion has an effect on how much arrives. In many cases you pay less if you send INR straight away through a provider that converts near the mid-market rate rather than letting the receiving bank convert. With bigger transfers, a seemingly small difference in the rate can be worth more than the fee.
Transfer times to India
There is no fixed answer for payments to India: some land the same day or the next. Bank holidays in either country add a day or more.
If the money seems late, the sender should contact the sending bank for a trace. Money transfer services often provide tracking in their app, which makes it easier to see where the money is.
International payments to India and the BIC
For India you will usually need the BIC – India is not a SEPA country. Without it, your bank will not send the transfer at all.
Not every country uses the IBAN; in that case the local account number is used instead. The receiving bank usually provides a list of required details for incoming international payments. International transfers can pass through one or more intermediary banks and fees can be taken along the way.
Getting paid from abroad into an account in India
A sender in another country will ask for a few details from you – incomplete details often cause delays. Give them the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and your address.
Look up your bank in the list above to check its code – your bank statement is the final word. Certain sending banks also want the name and address of your bank; it does no harm to include it.
What lands in your account can be lower than what was sent. Charges on incoming payments differ from bank to bank – your bank’s price list tells you what applies. On invoices, state who bears the costs, so nobody is left short.
SWIFT codes in India: banks under :letter
You are looking at a filtered list: just banks in India whose name begins with :letter. The counts in the introduction still cover all banks in India, not just this letter.
Cannot find the bank? Its official name may start with a different letter, for example the full legal name rather than a brand name. Try the full list for India if you do not know the exact name.
The cheapest way to send money to India
If you transfer money to India via a regular bank, the fee you see is rarely all of the cost. You pay a transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks and, above all, the exchange rate markup.
Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate, not in the fee: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. Compare the bank’s rate against the mid-market rate that you find on financial sites; the gap is what conversion costs you.
Specialised transfer providers often use rates closer to the mid-market rate and lower fees. On GoldexPay you can compare what recipients in India receive with different services, so you can pick the cheapest route.
Verifying a SWIFT code from India
Have the recipient send you their bank details straight from their online banking. A wrong code may lead to delays, a returned payment or extra fees.
We gather SWIFT/BIC codes using public sources and update them from time to time. Still, banks merge, rename themselves or change codes. Treat our data as a starting point, not as the final word. GoldexPay is not a bank and has no link to the banks in this list.
Be wary of payment requests with a new account – a common fraud method. A real SWIFT code tells you nothing about whether a request is genuine.
Most SWIFT codes in India: State Bank of India
Of all banks we list for India, State Bank of India is listed with the largest number of codes. Its head office code is SBININBBXXX.
Many codes often means separate codes for branches, departments or services, not necessarily that the bank is the biggest in the country. Making a payment to State Bank of India? Use SBININBBXXX except when the recipient gives you a branch code.
How SWIFT codes from India are built
A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long and the parts always come in the same order. It starts with four letters for the bank, then a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.
Whatever the bank, all India codes have the same country code in positions five and six: the ISO code of the country. If the country letters point to another country, the code belongs to a bank somewhere else, so check again.
If the last three are XXX, it refers to the main office and the short version works just as well. In most cases the head office code is fine.
