SWIFT/BIC codes in India
Our directory contains 394 banks and financial institutions in India, with 4272 SWIFT/BIC codes in total. You will need such a code mainly for payments across borders.
Every bank has its own page with its main code and if there are any, branch codes. The rest of this page explain how the codes work, what transfers cost and the checks worth doing.
How SWIFT codes from India are built
SWIFT/BIC codes follow the same format worldwide: 8 characters. The first four letters stand for the bank, the fifth and sixth characters are the country code and the next two give the location.
For banks in India, letters five and six are the two-letter ISO code of India. When those two letters point to another country, the code belongs to a bank somewhere else, so check again.
An 11-character code adds three characters for a branch – XXX stands for the head office. Use a branch code just when the recipient explicitly gives you one.
The cheapest way to send money to India
The price of a payment to India has several parts. There is a transfer fee, possibly charges from intermediary banks along the way and, above all, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.
The markup on the rate tends to be the largest part of the cost because it is hidden in the rate. An easy check: set the offered rate next to the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.
For many currency pairs, a transfer service turns out to be cheaper than a traditional bank transfer, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay lists these providers side by side, showing the amount that reaches the recipient before you commit.

India and the Indian Rupee
The local currency of India is the Indian Rupee (INR). When you pay another currency, the amount gets converted at some point – by your bank, a bank in between or the recipient’s bank.
Who does the conversion has an effect on how much arrives, since every bank sets its own rate. In many cases it is cheaper to send INR directly through a transfer service with a good rate. Exchange rates change all the time.
How reliable is this list?
The best place to find the right code is paperwork issued by the bank, such as a statement or the account page in online banking. An incorrect BIC may lead to delays, a payment being sent back or additional charges.
This list is compiled from public sources that we update periodically. Banks merge, close branches and change codes, and no directory catches every change immediately. For any payment of any size, confirm the code with the recipient. We are a comparison site and not part of any bank listed here.
Watch out for payment requests containing a new account. A real SWIFT code tells you nothing about who owns the account.
Which bank in India has the most codes?
Among the 394 institutions we list, State Bank of India holds the largest number of SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in India. Its main office has SBININBBXXX.
Many codes often reflects separate codes for branches, departments or services. Paying someone at State Bank of India? Go with SBININBBXXX except when the recipient gives you a branch code.
Getting paid from abroad into an account in India
Someone abroad who wants to pay you needs several details from you, and missing ones are a common cause of delays. Give them the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, your bank’s SWIFT code and your address.
Look up the bank in the list on this page – your bank statement is the final word. Some sending banks also want the name and address of your bank.
The amount you receive is often less than the amount sent. Charges on incoming payments differ from bank to bank; check the price list of your bank. Make clear with the sender who pays which costs before the money is sent.
Why a transfer to India needs a SWIFT code
Since India does not belong to SEPA, an international payment normally goes as a SWIFT payment. This means you always need the BIC of the recipient’s bank in addition to the account details.
Not every country uses the IBAN – where there is none, the local account number is enough. The receiving bank often has a list of required details for incoming international payments. SWIFT payments can pass through correspondent banks.
How long does a transfer to India take?
A SWIFT payment to India usually needs anywhere from one to several business days. Payments made late in the day or on weekends and holidays often go out a business day later.
A growing number of banks use SWIFT gpi, which lets them follow a payment from bank to bank. Each payment gets a unique reference, the UETR that banks can use to see where the money is. Money transfer services often provide a status in their app so you can follow the payment.
