India: banks and their SWIFT/BIC codes

Here you will find the SWIFT/BIC codes of 394 banks in India. Every code points to a bank or one of its branches.

Pick the bank below to see its head office code and its other codes along with tips for payments to and from that bank. Below the list we explain how codes from India are built, how to send money there without overpaying and how to check a code before you pay.

Why a transfer to India needs a SWIFT code

Since India is outside SEPA, a transfer from abroad is usually sent as a SWIFT payment. This means the payment always needs the BIC of the recipient’s bank in addition to the account details.

Not all countries use IBAN numbers – where there is none, the local account number is enough. Check with the recipient which details their bank needs for incoming international payments; banks often publish instructions for this. Before it arrives, a transfer can pass through intermediary banks that take a fee.

Which bank in India has the most codes?

In our directory, State Bank of India has the most SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in India. The head office uses SBININBBXXX – the code most transfers need.

Practice differs in how many codes they register. Paying someone at State Bank of India? Use SBININBBXXX unless a specific branch code is requested.

When does money sent to India arrive?

There is no fixed delivery time for payments to India: many land the same day or the next, others take several business days. Public holidays in either country add extra days.

When a payment takes longer than expected, ask the sender to contact the sending bank for a trace – the receiving bank often cannot see a payment that has not arrived. Keep the payment confirmation until the recipient confirms.

Bank or transfer service for India?

A bank transfer to India can cost more than the fee suggests. There is a transfer fee, sometimes fees from correspondent banks and, above all, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.

The real cost is often in the rate: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. Compare the bank’s rate with the mid-market rate.

For many routes, a specialist provider turns out to be less expensive than a traditional bank transfer. Before your next transfer to India, take a minute comparing what arrives on GoldexPay.

The structure of a India SWIFT/BIC code

A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long and follows a fixed pattern. First comes a four-letter bank code, then a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.

You can spot a bank code from India from letters five and six: they always show the ISO country code of India. Codes with other letters in that position belong to a bank abroad – a quick way to catch mistakes.

If the last three are XXX, it refers to the main office. In most cases the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

Receiving money in India from abroad

When you are waiting for money from abroad in India, send the payer all details at once. Share the account holder’s name, the IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and your address.

Find the bank in the list above and compare the code with your own bank details – your bank statement is the final word. Some banks also want your bank’s address; it does no harm to include it.

Do not be surprised if the incoming amount is below the amount on the sender’s receipt. Fees for incoming transfers differ from bank to bank – your bank’s price list tells you what applies. Make clear with the sender who pays which costs.

How reliable is this list?

The best place to find the right code remains a document from the bank itself. When the code you were given does not match our list, do not guess – contact the recipient or their bank.

The directory on GoldexPay is compiled from public sources and is updated regularly. Institutions merge, change names and retire codes – a directory can be a step behind. For a payment that matters, check the code with the recipient. GoldexPay is a comparison site for money transfers, not a bank.

Be wary of payment requests containing changed bank details, especially when they come by email. Always confirm a change of bank details through a separate channel.

India and the Indian Rupee

India pays in the Indian Rupee (INR). When you pay money in a different currency, it has to be converted somewhere along the way – by your bank, a bank in between or the recipient’s bank.

Who converts the payment matters. Check what INR the recipient gets via several providers. Rates for INR move during the day.

You are looking at a filtered list: only institutions in India with a name starting with :letter. The counts in the introduction always cover all banks in India, not just this letter.

Cannot find the bank? The registered name might begin with another word, for example the full legal name rather than a brand name. Use the full list for India if you do not know how the name is spelled.
