Paysend vs Revolut

Picking Paysend or Revolut comes down to more than the brand name. The real question is how much of your money arrives once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are added up. That is the gap we measure here.

On our site, Paysend falls into the money transfer service category and handles Currencies, while Revolut belongs to broker and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. That alone tells you quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and which one fits which situation. Rates on this page are live, so the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

How fast the money arrives

The fastest delivery we have on record for Paysend is Within minutes; for Revolut it is Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

Speed often depends on how you pay. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.

Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.

Small amounts vs large amounts

The size of the amount can change the winner. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.

Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. Before a big transfer with Paysend or Revolut, read the current pricing on their site.

How we calculate the cost

The cost of a conversion has two parts: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

GoldexPay is independent. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.

Where the real cost hides

Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

Our verdict

In 6 of 6 comparisons we can test on both sides, Revolut left you with more money after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with Revolut.

That does not make Paysend the wrong choice. The scenario table above shows which conversions Paysend still wins, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, Paysend is simply the cheaper option for you.

There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Paysend. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

Why not use both?

Many people do not use one provider for everything. It is perfectly normal to keep Paysend for one task and Revolut for another. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

For anything above everyday amounts, check the calculator on this page, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It is a quick check that pays off.

If you switch, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.

Regulation and safety

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.

The right choice depends on what you do

For travel spending, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

If you want to buy crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
