How SWIFT codes from Taiwan are built
A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long. First comes a four-letter bank code, then two letters for the country and a two-character location code.
You can spot a bank code from Taiwan by the fifth and sixth characters. When the country letters point to another country, the code belongs to a bank in another country – worth double-checking.
When a code ends in XXX, it refers to the head office, and the 8-character version leads to the same place. In most cases the head office code is what you need.
About our data and how to check a code
The most reliable place for the right code is paperwork issued by the bank, such as a statement or the account page in online banking. If the code you have differs from our list, stop and ask.
We collect SWIFT/BIC codes using publicly available data and check them regularly. Institutions merge, change names and change codes – a directory can be a step behind. Treat our data as a reference, not as the final word: the bank details from the recipient come first. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site.
Be wary of payment requests with changed bank details, especially when they come by email. A valid BIC says nothing about who owns the account: criminals use real codes too.
The largest SWIFT network in Taiwan: Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD.
Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD. tops the list of Taiwan banks in the number of SWIFT/BIC codes. The head office uses HNBKTWTPXXX – the code most transfers need.
How many codes a bank has tells you something about how it registers branches and services than about how big it is. Unless a branch code is given, the head office code HNBKTWTPXXX works for transfers to this bank.
Incoming international payments in Taiwan
When you are waiting for a payment from another country in Taiwan, send the payer a complete set of details. In practice that means: your full name as your bank knows it, your IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and, often, your postal address.
Your bank’s code is in the list on this page but always compare it with your own bank details. You can include the name and city of your bank.
The amount you receive can be less than what was sent. Fees for incoming transfers vary from bank to bank – your bank’s price list tells you what applies. On invoices, agree who bears the costs.
SWIFT transfers to Taiwan
Taiwan is outside the SEPA area. Payments from abroad usually go through the SWIFT network, and the BIC of the receiving bank is required.
Depending on the country, accounts are identified by a domestic account number instead of an IBAN and sometimes a local routing or branch code. Check with the recipient exactly which details their bank needs for payments from abroad; banks often publish instructions for this. SWIFT payments can pass through one or more intermediary banks and fees can be taken along the way.
Bank or transfer service for Taiwan?
A bank transfer to Taiwan often costs more than the fee suggests. There is a transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks and, above all, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.
That exchange rate margin is often the biggest cost item because it is hidden in the rate. A simple test: set the offered rate next to the mid-market rate and look at the difference.
Specialised transfer providers frequently use a rate near the mid-market rate. On GoldexPay you can compare what recipients in Taiwan receive with different providers, so you can pick the cheapest route.
When does money sent to Taiwan arrive?
There is no fixed delivery time for transfers to Taiwan: many arrive within a day while others need several business days. Transfers sent after the cut-off time or just before weekends and holidays usually go out the next business day.
Many banks are connected to SWIFT gpi. Each payment gets a unique reference, the UETR, which the sending bank can use to trace it. Save the payment confirmation until the recipient confirms.
