How a SWIFT/BIC code from Taiwan is structured
A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:
- RISS Bank code
- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- TW Country code
- 2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
- T1 Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
Taiwan: banks and their SWIFT/BIC codes
Here you will find codes for 369 banks in Taiwan. Each code identifies a bank or a specific branch or department and tells other banks where an international payment should go.
Pick the bank from the list to see its head office code and its other codes, plus practical notes for sending and receiving money. Further down we explain how codes from Taiwan are built, how to send money to Taiwan without overpaying and how to check a code before you pay.
Check the code before you pay
The most reliable source for the BIC is the bank details provided by the recipient. If the code you have does not match our list, stop and ask – contact the recipient or their bank.
We gather bank codes using public sources and update our list from time to time. Banks merge, change names and change codes, and no directory catches every change immediately. Use this list as a reference rather than the last word; the recipient’s bank details are leading. GoldexPay is not a bank and has no link to the banks in this list.
Be wary of invoices containing a new account, especially when they come by email. A valid BIC tells you nothing about who owns the account.
The cheapest way to send money to Taiwan
A bank transfer to Taiwan can cost rather more than you think. On top of a fixed fee, intermediary banks can take a cut and, if currencies are converted, the bank often applies a less favourable rate than the actual market rate.
That exchange rate margin is often the biggest part of the cost because it is hidden in the rate. Compare the bank’s rate against the mid-market rate, the midpoint you see on financial news sites; the gap is what conversion costs you.
For many currency pairs, a transfer service turns out to be cheaper than a traditional bank transfer, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay lists these providers next to each other, showing the amount that reaches the recipient for the same amount sent.

The largest SWIFT network in Taiwan: Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD.
Of all banks we list for Taiwan, Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD. is listed with the largest number of codes. The head office of Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD. has HNBKTWTPXXX.
The number of codes says more about how it organises its payments than about how big it is. If not the recipient asks for a branch, HNBKTWTPXXX is fine for a payment to Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD..
International payments to Taiwan and the BIC
Since Taiwan is outside SEPA, a transfer from abroad is usually sent as a SWIFT payment. This means you always need the SWIFT/BIC code of the receiving bank.
In some countries, accounts are identified by a local account number instead of an IBAN and sometimes a local routing or branch code. Check with the recipient exactly which details their bank requires for payments from abroad – many banks give clear instructions for this. SWIFT payments sometimes go via one or more intermediary banks.
Getting paid from abroad into an account in Taiwan
For a transfer from abroad into a Taiwan account, the person paying you has to have not just the SWIFT code. In practice that means: your full name as your bank knows it, your account number or IBAN, the SWIFT/BIC code of your bank and usually your address.
Find the bank in the list above to check its code – your bank statement is the final word. It helps to include the name and city of your bank as well because some forms have separate fields for it.
The amount you receive can be less than the amount sent. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate comes on top. Make clear with the sender who pays which costs before the money is sent.
When does money sent to Taiwan arrive?
How fast money arrives in Taiwan is determined by a few things: which currency you send, how many intermediary banks are involved, daily processing deadlines and differences in time zone. Transfers sent after the cut-off time or just before a weekend or public holiday often start the next business day.
When a payment takes longer than expected, ask the sender to contact the sending bank and ask for the status or the UETR – the receiving bank often cannot see a payment that has not arrived. Money transfer services usually show a status online.
The structure of a Taiwan SWIFT/BIC code
A BIC is 8 or 11 characters long. Characters one to four stand for the bank, characters five and six form the country code and the next two mark the location.
No matter which bank, all Taiwan codes share the same fifth and sixth letters. Codes with other letters in that position come from another country, even if the bank name looks familiar.
When a code ends in XXX, it refers to the main office and the short version works just as well. Choose a branch code only if the recipient’s bank asks for it.
