Finding a SWIFT code in Taiwan
This directory contains 369 banks and financial institutions in Taiwan and 1889 SWIFT/BIC codes between them. A BIC tells the banks handling a transfer which institution should receive the money.
Search for the recipient’s bank below and click through for all codes we have. The sections below covers how the codes work, the cost of transfers and the checks worth doing before a payment.
How long does a transfer to Taiwan take?
A SWIFT payment to Taiwan usually needs one to a few business days. Payments made late in the day or on a weekend or public holiday usually go out a business day later.
Many banks use SWIFT gpi. Each payment gets a unique transaction reference, the UETR that banks can use to see where the money is. Keep your transfer receipt until the money has arrived; a bank needs it to start a trace.
Which bank in Taiwan has the most codes?
Of the 369 banks we list for Taiwan, Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD. has the most SWIFT codes. The head office uses HNBKTWTPXXX.
Practice differs in whether they register branch codes. Unless the recipient asks for a branch, the head office code HNBKTWTPXXX works for a payment to Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD..
What a sender needs to pay you in Taiwan
Someone abroad who wants to pay you needs several details about your account – incomplete details often cause delays. In practice that means: your name as your bank knows it, your account number or IBAN, the SWIFT/BIC code of your bank and, often, your address.
Find your bank in the list above, but take the code from your own bank details when in doubt. It helps to add your bank’s name and city because some forms have separate fields for it.
Expect that the amount credited is smaller than what the sender paid. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and when currencies differ, a markup on the rate applies. Agree with the sender who pays which costs, especially for larger amounts.
Bank or transfer service for Taiwan?
An international bank payment to Taiwan often costs more than you think. There is a transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks and, most importantly, the exchange rate markup when currencies differ.
That exchange rate margin tends to be the largest part of the cost because it is hidden in the rate. Compare the bank’s rate against the mid-market rate; the gap is what conversion costs you.
Specialist money transfer services often use a rate near the mid-market rate. GoldexPay compares the amount that arrives in Taiwan with different services, which makes the cheapest option easy to spot.
Recognising a SWIFT code from Taiwan
Bank identifier codes use the same format worldwide: 8 characters plus an optional three-character extension. Characters one to four identify the bank, the fifth and sixth characters form the country code and characters seven and eight mark the location.
You can recognise a code from Taiwan by letters five and six – those always form the country code of Taiwan. A code with other letters in that position come from another country – a quick way to catch mistakes.
The optional last three characters stand for a specific branch; XXX means the head office. In most cases the head office code is what you need, unless the recipient gives you a branch code.
International payments to Taiwan and the BIC
To pay into Taiwan you will almost always need a SWIFT/BIC code – Taiwan is not a SEPA country. Without the BIC, most banks cannot send the transfer at all.
Depending on the country, the account is identified by a domestic account number rather than an IBAN. Check with the recipient which details their bank requires for incoming international payments – many banks give clear instructions for this. International transfers can pass through correspondent banks, each of which may deduct a fee.
SWIFT codes in Taiwan: banks under :letter
This list only shows banks in Taiwan whose name starts with :letter in alphabetical order. The counts in the introduction still refer to all banks in Taiwan.
Some banks are listed under their legal name rather than the name on their app or website, so the letter can differ from what you expect. Use the full list for Taiwan if you are not sure how the name is spelled.
Check the code before you pay
Have the recipient send you the account details straight from a recent statement. An incorrect BIC may lead to delays, a payment being sent back or extra fees.
The directory on GoldexPay is compiled from publicly available sources. Institutions reorganise, change names and change codes. For a payment that matters, confirm the BIC with the recipient’s bank. We are an independent comparison service.
Scammers regularly send payment requests with new bank details from what looks like a familiar address. Before paying, verify a change of bank details through a separate channel on a number you know.
