Taiwan: banks and their SWIFT/BIC codes

This directory covers 369 banks and other institutions in Taiwan. You need a SWIFT/BIC code mostly for international transfers, and especially for payments in foreign currencies.

Every bank has its own page showing the head office code and, where available, codes for branches and departments. The rest of this page explain how the codes work, what transfers cost and the checks worth doing before a payment.

Sending money to Taiwan for less

A bank transfer to Taiwan often costs more than you think. There is a transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks and, most importantly, the margin on the exchange rate if the money is converted.

The real cost is often in the rate. An easy check: set the rate you get against the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

For many routes, a specialist provider turns out to be less expensive than a bank, mainly because of the rate. On GoldexPay we compare the amount that arrives in Taiwan across providers.

Transfer times to Taiwan

An international transfer to Taiwan usually takes anywhere from one to several business days. Bank holidays in Taiwan or in the sending country add a day or more.

A growing number of banks use SWIFT gpi. Every payment gets a unique reference, the UETR that banks can use to see where the money is. Money transfer services usually show a status in their app, which makes it easier to see where the money is.

Paying a bank in Taiwan from abroad

For Taiwan you will usually need a SWIFT/BIC code – Taiwan is not a SEPA country. Without it, most banks cannot send the payment at all.

Not all countries use the IBAN – where there is none, the local account number is enough. Check with the recipient which details their bank requires for incoming international payments; banks often publish instructions for this. Before it arrives, a transfer may go through correspondent banks.

The largest SWIFT network in Taiwan: Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD.

Of all banks we list for Taiwan, Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD. has the most codes. The head office uses HNBKTWTPXXX – the code most transfers need.

Many codes often means that the bank registers branches and departments separately. Making a payment to Hua Nan Commercial Bank, LTD.? Use HNBKTWTPXXX except when a specific branch code is requested.

The structure of a Taiwan SWIFT/BIC code

A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long and the parts always come in the same order. It starts with a four-letter bank code, followed by a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.

For banks in Taiwan, letters five and six are the two-letter ISO code of Taiwan, which makes these codes easy to recognise. A code with a different country code belong to a bank abroad, even if the bank name looks familiar.

The long version adds three characters for a branch, where XXX means the head office. Choose a branch code only when the recipient explicitly gives you one – otherwise stick with the head office.

Incoming international payments in Taiwan

If you are waiting for a payment from another country in Taiwan, send the payer a complete set of details. In practice that means: your name exactly as it appears on the account, your IBAN or account number, the SWIFT/BIC code of your bank and sometimes your postal address.

Your bank’s code is in the list on this page but always compare it with your own bank details. Certain sending banks may also want your bank’s address, so keep it at hand.

What lands in your account can be lower than the amount sent. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee, and if the money is converted, an exchange rate margin comes on top. Agree with the sender who pays which costs.

About our data and how to check a code

The most reliable source for the BIC is the recipient’s own bank details – an invoice, a statement or a screenshot from online banking. A wrong code can cause delays, a returned payment or additional charges – compare it with the code in our list.

We collect bank codes using public sources and update our list regularly. Still, banks merge or retire codes, so information can be out of date. Before a payment of any size, check the code with the recipient. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site and is not affiliated with the banks listed.

Fraudsters regularly use payment requests carrying changed bank details that look completely genuine. A valid BIC says nothing about who owns the account: criminals use real codes too.
