The way a SWIFT/BIC code from Ireland is built up

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

GAIA Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
IE Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
21 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

SWIFT/BIC codes in Ireland

Here you will find the SWIFT/BIC codes of 675 banks in Ireland – 1087 codes altogether. A SWIFT code tells the banks handling a transfer exactly which bank is meant to get an international payment.

Each bank is listed with its own page showing its main code and, where available, codes for branches and departments. The rest of this page explain how the codes work, the cost of transfers and how to avoid mistakes.

Recognising a SWIFT code from Ireland

Bank identifier codes follow the same format worldwide: 8 characters, sometimes followed by three more. The first four letters stand for the bank, the fifth and sixth characters are the country code and the next two give the location.

For banks in Ireland, characters five and six are the ISO country code of Ireland, which makes these codes easy to recognise. A code with a different country code belong to another country.

The last three characters, if present, identify a branch or department; XXX means the head office. In most cases the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

When does money sent to Ireland arrive?

How quickly a payment reaches Ireland depends on several factors: which currency you send, how many intermediary banks are involved, daily processing deadlines and time zones. Payments made after the cut-off time or just before a weekend or public holiday usually go out the next business day.

If a transfer seems late, the sender should contact the sending bank; only the sending side can start an official trace. Save the payment confirmation until the recipient confirms.

Receiving money in Ireland from abroad

If you expect a payment from another country in Ireland, give the sender everything they need in one go. Share the account holder’s name, the IBAN or account number, your bank’s SWIFT code and your address.

Find your bank in the list on this page to check its code, but take the code from your own bank details when in doubt. It helps to add the name and city of your bank because some forms have separate fields for it.

The amount you receive can be lower than what was sent. Fees for incoming transfers vary from bank to bank. On invoices, agree how the fees are split, so nobody is left short.

Ireland and the Euro

Ireland uses the Euro, code EUR. If you send money in a different currency, the amount has to be converted somewhere along the way – by your bank, a bank in between or the recipient’s bank.

Who converts the money makes a difference: every bank has its own margin. Check how much EUR the recipient gets via different providers. Rates for EUR change all the time, so a quote is usually valid only briefly.

Verifying a SWIFT code from Ireland

The most reliable place for the correct BIC is paperwork issued by the bank. A wrong code may lead to a delay, a returned payment or additional charges, so compare it with the list on this page.

Our SWIFT/BIC directory draws on public sources. Even so, banks merge or change codes. Treat our data as a reference: the bank details from the recipient come first. GoldexPay is not a bank and has no link to the banks in this list.

Watch out for invoices containing a new account – a common fraud method. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether a request is genuine: criminals use real codes too.

Filter: banks in Ireland with :letter

The letter filter narrows the list to banks from Ireland that begin with :letter, so you can find a bank faster. The figures for Ireland mentioned here cover every bank we list.

Most SWIFT codes in Ireland: Danske Bank A/S

In our data, Danske Bank A/S holds the largest number of SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in Ireland. Its main office uses DABAIE2DXXX and that code covers most payments.

The number of codes says something about how it registers branches and services than about how big it is. Paying someone at Danske Bank A/S? Use DABAIE2DXXX except when the recipient gives you a branch code.

SEPA transfers to Ireland

Ireland is a member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), where euro transfers follow common rules. When you send euros within SEPA, you normally only need the IBAN and the BIC is often filled in automatically.

The BIC does come into play when the currency is not euros and for transfers from outside SEPA. Instant payments in euros are widely available across SEPA. As long as the payment stays in euros, a SEPA transfer is usually cheap.

What a transfer to Ireland really costs

What you pay for a payment to Ireland has more than one component. Besides a fixed fee, intermediary banks may deduct a charge, and when the money is converted the bank often uses a rate below the real market rate.

The markup on the rate tends to be the largest part of the cost. Check the rate you are offered against the mid-market rate, the midpoint you see on financial news sites.

Money transfer services often offer rates closer to the mid-market rate and lower fees. GoldexPay compares these providers next to each other, showing what actually arrives in Ireland for the same amount sent.
