SWIFT/BIC codes in Ireland
In Ireland we have 1087 SWIFT/BIC codes. You need a SWIFT/BIC code mainly when making international transfers.
Pick the bank from the list to view the head office code and its other codes along with tips for payments to and from that bank. The sections below covers the structure of the codes, the cost of transfers and how to avoid mistakes.
Recognising a SWIFT code from Ireland
Each SWIFT/BIC code has eight or eleven characters, always in the same order. It starts with a four-letter bank code, followed by a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.
You can spot a code from Ireland from the fifth and sixth characters – those always form the country code of Ireland. Codes with other letters in that position belong to another country, even if the bank name looks familiar.
The optional last three characters identify a specific branch; XXX is used for the head office. For most transfers the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.
Bank or transfer service for Ireland?
If you send money to Ireland with your bank, the fee you see is rarely all of what you pay. Besides a fixed fee, correspondent banks may deduct a charge, and when the money is converted the bank often uses a less favourable rate than the actual market rate.
Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. An easy check: set the rate you get against the mid-market rate and look at the difference.
Specialist money transfer services often offer a rate near the mid-market rate with clearer fees. Before your next transfer to Ireland, it is worth to compare the total cost via GoldexPay rather than accepting the first rate you see.
When does money sent to Ireland arrive?
A SWIFT payment to Ireland usually needs one to a few business days, depending on the currency, the route and the banks involved. Payments made after the cut-off time or on a weekend or public holiday usually start the next business day.
Many banks use SWIFT gpi. Every payment carries a unique transaction reference, the UETR. Money transfer services often show a status in their app, which makes it easier to see where the money is.
Most SWIFT codes in Ireland: Danske Bank A/S
In our data, Danske Bank A/S has the most SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in Ireland. Its head office code is DABAIE2DXXX, which is the code to use when no branch is specified.
Practice differs in whether they register branch codes, so the count is not a ranking of size. Unless a branch code is given, DABAIE2DXXX is fine for a payment to Danske Bank A/S.
Sending EUR to Ireland
The currency of Ireland is the Euro (EUR). A payment in a foreign currency will be converted into EUR before it reaches the account – and the bank that does it picks the rate.
Who does the conversion affects the final amount. Check how much EUR arrives with different providers. On larger amounts, a seemingly small difference in the rate adds up quickly.
What a sender needs to pay you in Ireland
If you expect a payment from another country in Ireland, give the sender everything they need in one go. Share the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, your bank’s SWIFT code and your address, which some banks require.
The code of your bank is in our list but always compare it with your own bank details. It helps to add your bank’s name and city, since some payment forms ask for it.
Expect that the amount credited is below the amount on the sender’s receipt. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate applies. On invoices, agree who bears the costs.
How reliable is this list?
Have the recipient send you their bank details straight from their banking app. If the code you have differs from our list, do not guess: check with the recipient or the bank.
The directory on GoldexPay draws on public sources and is updated regularly. Even so, banks merge or retire codes, so information can be out of date. Before a payment that matters, check the code with the recipient’s bank. We are a comparison service and not part of any bank listed here.
Watch out for invoices containing changed bank details. Always confirm a change of bank details by phone, using a number you already had.

Ireland and the SEPA area
Ireland belongs to the SEPA area. For a regular euro transfer within SEPA, the IBAN is usually enough; many banks no longer ask for the BIC.
The BIC does come into play for payments in other currencies and when the money comes from outside SEPA. Instant euro transfers are widely supported across SEPA, though not every bank offers them for every account. Costs stay low provided everything stays in euros – conversion is what costs money.
