How a SWIFT/BIC code from Ireland is structured

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

LACL Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
IE Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
21 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Ireland: banks and their SWIFT/BIC codes

On this page you find codes for 675 banks in Ireland, 1087 codes in all. You will need a SWIFT/BIC code mostly when making payments across borders.

Each bank has its own page showing the head office code and if there are any, branch codes. Below the list you can read how a code from Ireland is put together, how to send money there without overpaying and what to check before you pay.

Tracking a payment to Ireland

An international transfer to Ireland typically takes anywhere from one to several business days. Bank holidays in Ireland or in the sending country can add extra days.

A growing number of banks use SWIFT gpi. Each payment gets a unique transaction reference, the UETR, which the sending bank can use to trace it. Keep your transfer receipt until the money has arrived – you will need it if something goes wrong.

Which bank in Ireland has the most codes?

Among the 675 institutions we list, Danske Bank A/S holds the most SWIFT/BIC codes in Ireland. The head office uses DABAIE2DXXX.

The number of codes tells you more about how it registers branches and services than about its size. Unless a branch code is given, DABAIE2DXXX is fine for a payment to Danske Bank A/S.

Bank or transfer service for Ireland?

A bank transfer to Ireland can cost rather more than the fee suggests. You pay a transfer fee, sometimes fees from correspondent banks and, most importantly, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.

That exchange rate margin tends to be the largest part of the cost because it is hidden in the rate. An easy check: put the rate you get against the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

For a lot of routes, a specialist provider is less expensive than a traditional bank transfer, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay compares the amount that arrives in Ireland with different providers.

Sending EUR to Ireland

Most accounts in Ireland are typically held in EUR. A payment in a foreign currency will be converted into EUR, and whoever converts it chooses the rate.

Where the conversion happens affects the final amount, since every bank sets its own rate. Check what EUR the recipient gets with several providers; the difference between options can be larger than you expect. Exchange rates move all the time – some providers let you lock in a rate.

Ireland and the SEPA area

Because Ireland is in SEPA, a euro transfer to an account in Ireland usually requires just the IBAN. Many banks no longer ask for the BIC in that case.

You will still need the BIC when sending payments in other currencies or money from outside the SEPA area. Instant payments in euros have become widely supported within SEPA – check whether your bank supports them. As long as no conversion is involved, the transfer tends to be inexpensive.

How SWIFT codes from Ireland are built

A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long and follows a fixed pattern. It starts with a four-letter bank code, followed by two letters for the country and two characters for the location.

Whatever the bank, all Ireland codes have the same country code in positions five and six, namely the ISO code of Ireland. If the country letters do not match Ireland, you are looking at a bank somewhere else.

When a code ends in XXX, it means the main office. Choose a branch code only when the recipient explicitly gives you one; otherwise the head office code is the safe choice.

Banks in Ireland starting with :letter

Here you see a filtered list: just institutions in Ireland whose name begins with :letter. The figures for Ireland on this page cover every bank we list, not just the ones under :letter.

If the bank you need does not appear here, check another letter. The full overview for Ireland remains available when you cannot find the bank here.

How reliable is this list?

The safest source for the BIC is the bank details provided by the recipient – an invoice, a statement or a screenshot from online banking. An incorrect BIC may lead to delays, a returned payment or additional charges – compare it with the code in our list.

This list is based on publicly available sources. Even so, banks merge or change codes. Use this list as a starting point, not as the final word: the bank details from the recipient come first. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site.

Be wary of payment requests with changed bank details – a common fraud method. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether a request is genuine: criminals use real codes too.

What a sender needs to pay you in Ireland

For an international payment into a Ireland account, the sender has to have more than the SWIFT code. Share the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and your address.

The code of your bank appears in the list on this page, yet the version on your own statement or in your banking app is leading. You can add the name and city of your bank, since some payment forms ask for it.

The amount you receive can be less than what was sent. Correspondent banks can take a fee, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate comes on top. On invoices, state how the fees are split to avoid a shortfall.
