SWIFT/BIC codes in France
On this page you find codes for 2801 banks in France. A BIC shows the banks handling a transfer which institution is meant to get the money.
Pick the bank from the list to see its head office code and its other codes, plus practical notes for sending and receiving money. The sections below covers how the codes work, what transfers cost and how to avoid mistakes before a payment.
Incoming international payments in France
Someone abroad who wants to pay you will ask for a few details about your account. Share the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and your address, which some banks require.
Find the bank in the list on this page, but take the code from your own bank details when in doubt. Certain banks also ask for your bank’s address; it does no harm to include it.
What lands in your account is often lower than the amount sent. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee, your bank may charge for incoming payments, and if the money is converted, an exchange rate margin applies. Make clear with the sender who pays which costs, especially for larger amounts.
SEPA transfers to France
France is a member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), where euro transfers follow common rules. When you send euros from another SEPA country, the IBAN is usually enough and the BIC is often filled in automatically.
The BIC still come into play when the currency is not euros and for transfers from outside SEPA. Instant euro transfers have become widely available within SEPA – check whether your bank supports them. As long as no conversion is involved, a SEPA transfer is usually inexpensive.
Filter: banks in France with :letter
This filter limits the list down to banks from France that begin with :letter to make searching quicker. The totals mentioned above always cover the whole country, not just this letter.
Bank not listed? Its official name may start with a different letter – think of the full legal name instead of the brand. The complete list remains one click away if the letter filter does not help.
How reliable is this list?
The most reliable place for the correct BIC is a document from the bank itself, such as a statement or the account page in online banking. If the code you have differs from the code listed here, stop and ask.
We gather bank codes from publicly available data and check our list regularly. Institutions merge, change names and retire codes. Before any payment that matters, confirm the BIC with the recipient. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site and has no link to the banks in this list.
Scammers often use payment requests with changed bank details that look completely genuine. Before paying, verify changed details by phone, using a number you already had.
How SWIFT codes from France are built
Every SWIFT/BIC code consists of eight or eleven characters. Characters one to four identify the bank, characters five and six form the country code and the next two mark the location.
Whatever the bank, every code from France have the same fifth and sixth letters, namely the ISO code of France. Codes with a different country code belong to another country – a quick way to catch mistakes.
An 11-character code adds a branch code, where XXX means the head office. Choose a branch code only when the recipient explicitly gives you one – otherwise stick with the head office.
The cheapest way to send money to France
What you pay for a payment to France is made up of several parts – not only the fee you see. You pay a transfer fee, sometimes fees from correspondent banks along the way and, above all, the exchange rate markup.
That exchange rate margin is often the biggest part of the cost because it is hidden in the rate. A simple test: set the rate you get next to the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.
Specialist money transfer services often offer rates closer to the mid-market rate. GoldexPay compares the amount that arrives in France across providers, so you can pick the cheapest route.
Paying in EUR: what conversion costs you
The currency of France is the Euro (EUR). A payment in a foreign currency is exchanged into EUR before it reaches the account – and the bank that does it picks the rate.
Which bank converts the money makes a difference. Compare how much EUR the recipient gets with several providers before choosing one. Exchange rates change during the day.
Which bank in France has the most codes?
Of all banks in France, Credit Agricole is listed with the most SWIFT codes. Its head office code is AGRIFRPP802.
A large number of codes often means separate codes for branches, departments or services. Making a payment to Credit Agricole? Go with AGRIFRPP802 unless the recipient gives you a branch code.
Tracking a payment to France
There is no single delivery time for transfers to France: some land within a day, others take several business days. Payments made late in the day or just before a weekend or public holiday often go out the next business day.
Many banks use SWIFT gpi. Each gpi transfer carries a unique reference, the UETR, which the sending bank can use to trace it. Save your transfer receipt until the money has arrived.
