SWIFT/BIC codes in Netherlands

In Netherlands our database holds 1714 SWIFT/BIC codes from 704 banks. You will need such a code mainly for international transfers and for payments in a foreign currency.

Search for the recipient’s bank below and click through for the full list of codes and what else a transfer requires. Further down you can read how codes from Netherlands are built, how to send money there without overpaying and what to check before you pay.

How SWIFT codes from Netherlands are built

Each SWIFT/BIC code has eight or eleven characters in a fixed order. First comes a four-letter bank code, then a two-letter country code and two characters for the location.

No matter which bank, every code from Netherlands have the same fifth and sixth letters: the ISO code of the country. When those two letters do not match Netherlands, the code belongs to a bank in another country – worth double-checking.

If the last three are XXX, it means the head office. In most cases the head office code is what you need, unless the recipient gives you a branch code.

Paying in EUR: what conversion costs you

Netherlands pays in the Euro, with the currency code EUR. When you pay money in a different currency, it gets converted at some point: by your bank, an intermediary or the receiving bank.

Which bank converts the money matters. Often it is cheaper to send EUR straight away through a provider that converts near the mid-market rate so the receiving bank does not need to convert again. Exchange rates change during the day.

What a sender needs to pay you in Netherlands

Someone abroad who wants to pay you will ask for a few details about your account. Share your name as registered with the bank, the IBAN or account number, your bank’s SWIFT code and your address, which some banks require.

Your bank’s code is in the list on this page, yet the version on your own statement or in your banking app is leading. You can include your bank’s name and city as well.

Expect that the amount credited is smaller than what the sender paid. Correspondent banks can take a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and when currencies differ, an exchange rate margin applies. Agree with the sender who covers the fees before the money is sent.

How long does a transfer to Netherlands take?

How quickly money reaches Netherlands depends on a few things: which currency you send, the number of banks in between, cut-off times and time zones. Public holidays in either country can add extra days.

When a payment takes longer than expected, the sender should contact the sending bank for a trace; only the sending side can start an official trace. Keep the payment confirmation until the money has arrived; a bank needs it to start a trace.

How reliable is this list?

The most reliable source for a SWIFT code is the bank details provided by the recipient: an invoice, a statement or their online banking. If the code you have does not match the code listed here, do not guess.

We gather bank codes using public sources and update them regularly. Still, banks merge, rename themselves or retire codes, so information can be out of date. Before any payment that matters, confirm the code with the recipient. GoldexPay is not a bank and has no link to the banks in this list.

Watch out for invoices with a new account, especially when they come by email. A valid BIC tells you nothing about who owns the account: criminals use real codes too.

Euro payments to Netherlands: is a BIC needed?

Netherlands is a member of the SEPA area, the zone for uniform euro payments. For a regular euro transfer from another SEPA country, the IBAN is usually enough; many banks no longer ask for the BIC.

A SWIFT code still come into play for payments in other currencies. Euro payments within SEPA usually arrive by the next business day or faster with instant payments. Provided no conversion is involved, the transfer is usually inexpensive.

What a transfer to Netherlands really costs

When you send money to Netherlands through your bank, the stated fee is rarely all of what you pay. There is a transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks and, above all, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.

That exchange rate margin is often the largest cost item, even though it is not listed as a fee. An easy check: set the offered rate against the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

For many currency pairs, a transfer service is cheaper than a bank, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay compares the amount that arrives in Netherlands across providers, which makes the cheapest option easy to spot.
